Hello Dwayne this is a very good question for us.
The LED was first developed by 2 gentleman James R. Biard and Gary Pittman back in the fall of 1961. My research doesn’t show which of these companies they worked for at that time but GE, Bell Labs, Lincoln Labs, RCA research labs and Texas Instruments were all competing for the developement of these devices and other devices. TI was the first to Patent and sell an LED, the SNX-100 was sold to IBM for $130ea back in the summer of 1962. IBM used them to replace the bulbs they had been using in their famous Punch card readers.
